Recipe formats
- Amounts
- 2, 1.5, 1/2, 1 1/2, 1-1/2, ½, 1½, ranges like 2-3 or 2 to 3, and a or an before a unit
- Units
- cup or c; tablespoon, tbsp or T; teaspoon, tsp or t; fl oz, oz, lb, g, kg, mL, L, pint, quart, gallon; counts such as pinch, clove, can and stick
- Combined amounts
- 1 cup plus 2 tbsp, or 1 lb 4 oz, scale as one amount
- Package sizes
- In 2 (14.5 oz) cans, 1 15-ounce can or 2 cans (14.5 oz each), only the number of cans changes
- Second amounts
- 1 cup (240 mL), 1 cup / 240 mL, and amounts in parentheses later in the line, such as (about 1 tbsp), scale with the first
- Servings
- A line starting with Serves, Makes or Yield fills in the servings and scales with the recipe
- Temperatures
- With US or Metric selected, temperatures and gas marks in the text are converted. A line that already gives the temperature in both scales stays as written.
Cups and spoons are US customary measures: 1 cup is 8 fluid ounces (236.6 mL), 1 tablespoon is 1/2 fluid ounce, and 1 teaspoon is 1/3 tablespoon.
