      Rolling your own

      Roll five dice at once and read the faces from left to right, or roll one die five times. The five faces are the word's number in the long list: 43463 is panoramic. The short lists take four dice a word. If the dice land on a word this page leaves out, roll that word again.

      EFF publishes the lists as text files you can print: the long list, short list 1 and short list 2.

      How strength is counted

      Six words picked at random from the 7,304 long-list words used here give 7,3046 possible passphrases, which is 6 × log2 7,304, or 77.01 bits. A long-list word adds 12.83 bits, a word from short list 1 adds 10.27, and one from short list 2 adds 10.23. A guesser who knows the method needs to try half of the possibilities, on average, to find yours.

      Anything applied the same way every time adds nothing: a fixed separator, or capitals on every word. Random choices do. A random digit between words adds log2 10, about 3.32 bits, for each gap. Each choice comes from the browser's cryptographic random number generator, with every option exactly equally likely.

      EFF's Long Wordlist, Short Wordlist #1 and Short Wordlist #2, from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license.

      Brand names, insults, ethnic labels, and words about weapons, alcohol, drugs, gambling, religion, politics, gender, sex, weight and diet, illness, death and disasters are left out: 472 from the long list, 65 from short list 1 and 91 from short list 2. Every other word keeps its place and its dice number.
